FortifyFL and Tiger Hotline - Suspicious Activity Reporting

FortifyFL is an application that can be downloaded to your smart phone to allow parents and students to anonymously report suspicious activity or threats directly to school officials, local law enforcement and FDLE.  You can download the application at: https://getfortifyfl.com.

Tiger Hotline allows anonymous texts for reporting of unsafe behaviors such as bullying, self-harm, drugs on campus, planned fights, and any other threat to the school environment.  The number of the person that is reporting is not seen, so the text should included important details.

Florida’s 2016 Sales Tax Holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 5, and will end at midnight on Sunday, August 7.

Below is an excerpt from http://www.flgov.com/:

“I encourage parents and families throughout Florida to save money this weekend by shopping for the tax-free school supplies their children need in order to succeed in the classroom,” Governor Scott said. “Getting ready for a new school year can be expensive, and getting a tax break will help families stretch their hard-earned dollars.”

Throughout the weekend, Floridians will be able to purchase specific school supplies, clothing and footwear without paying state and local sales taxes. The tax exemption applies to specific items of clothing and footwear that cost $75 or less, as well as certain school supplies that cost $15 or less. Shoppers and retailers can find a list of tax-exempt items by visiting the Florida Department of Revenue’s website at http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/, in the “Current Topics” box.

Jefferson County School District Observes Disability History and Awareness Weeks
The first two weeks of October are Disability History and Awareness Weeks! Section 1003.4205, Florida Statutes, entitled Disability History and Awareness Instruction, was signed into law in 2008. It requires school districts to designate the first two weeks of October as Disability History and Awareness Weeks and also promotes providing instruction for students in all public schools to expand student knowledge, understanding, and awareness of individuals with disabilities, disability history, and the disability rights movement.

Please check out the video  to expand your knowledge, understanding and awareness of individuals that are disabled in our very own backyard. Jefferson County School District focuses on individuals' abilities rather than their disabilities.  For more information about Jefferson County School District Exceptional Student Education, please contact us at (850) 342-0100

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is the period from September 15 to October 15 in the United States, when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group’s heritage and culture. Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by president Lyndon Johnson in 1968 and the length of it was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period (September 15 – October 15). It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. All declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively.

Hispanic Heritage Month also celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in North America, starting with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on the morning of October 12, 1492. A map of late 18th-century North America shows this presence, from the small outpost of San Francisco founded in the desolate wilderness of Alta California in 1776, through the Spanish province of Texas with its vaqueros (cowboys), to the fortress of St. Augustine, Florida — the first continuous European settlement in North America, founded in 1565, forty-two years before the English landed in Jamestown, Virginia.

PARENTS! YOUR CHILD CAN DO IT!
Before you or your child becomes too stressed out about their future, know that staying in school to earn a diploma is the first important step to being successful in life. A diploma is the ticket to:

  • Higher education at any college or university;
  • A job; and
  • High school graduates earn an average of $143/week more than dropouts.  Dropping out of high school could equal a $479/week loss of earning power.

?In looking beyond a job, a diploma can mean:

  • A greater chance of living above the poverty line;
  • More likely to qualify for car, home loans and student loans; and
  • Graduating will boost your chld's self-esteem, and may allow your child to be an excellent role model for their siblings and friends.?

Your child's teachers, administration and District staff want to partner with you in ensuring your child's success.  We encourage you keep the lines of communication open and let us know what we are doing well or how we can improve.  We love to hear from you!

Veterans Day Graphic

"Whether storming the beaches of Normandy, holding the line at Bunker Hill, or braving the perils of a Desert Storm, America's citizen soldiers have never failed to rise to the challenge (J. Reynell)." Originally labeled Armistice Day, in 1954 President Eisenhower changed the official name to Veteran's Day, in an effort to honor all who have faithfully served in our nation's Armed Services.
Always observed on November 11th, Veteran's Day is a perfect opportunity to show support for our men and women who have served, and who currently serve in the Armed Services.  A voluntary service, these men and women choose to protect the freedoms we take for granted, and uphold the constitution; a document whose contents have become lesser known, yet it is that document that guarantees those rights and freedoms that our men and women serve to protect.
Veteran's Day; a perfect opportunity to fly your flag, attend a parade or ceremony, or most importantly, shake the hand or hug the neck of a Veteran and sincerely thank them for their service.

To address both public concerns, the U.S. Department of Education and their federal health partners have a number of informational resources to share with the community.

PARENTS OF HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS

Are you the parent of a high school Junior?  If you can answer, "yes" to that question, you may want to to utilize the following helpful hints:  1) check your child's status towards meeting high school graduation requirements.  It is as easy as calling the Guidance Counselor to make arrangements for your child and you to review your child's transcript.  Set up a time for you and your child to meet with the Counselor to determine the best college options.  2)  As a Junior, it is important to start keeping track of important dates, i.e. ACT and SAT test dates, application deadlines for colleges that spark an interest, as well as scholarship deadlines.  Keep a folder with the pertinent information to help keep you on track.  3).  Help your child contact colleges they are interested in and ask for information to be sent.  It is never too early to begin looking at the information to determine if a college can meet his/her needs.  4).  If your child needs community service hours in order to qualify for scholarships such as Bright Futures, contact entities that qualify and help your child make arrangements to begin donating their time -- Perhaps as a parent, you may want to volunteer right alongside your student!  5).  Help your child register for the ACT and SAT so he/she can begin taking the tests.  It is never too early, and your child can take it as many times as they want.  Colleges will look at their best scores.  Parents, your interest in, and encouragement of, your child goes a long way.  In the words of Charles Swindoll, "Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children."

UF Immersion Experience

In the PAEC-served area, 29 STEM Scholars and five teachers participated in a variety of experiences at the University of Florida and STEM Scholars were exposed to a variety of STEM Career Preparatory programs available at the university.

Spotlight on Tiger P.R.I.D.E: Jamie Price

“She’s wonderful!” Dr. McCombs’, principal of Jefferson Middle High School, replied when asked about the new face in the front office. Jamie Price, moved with her husband and two children from Central Florida a year ago as her husband took a job with Duke Energy. Their two children both attend Jefferson Middle High School. Although this is Jamie’s first experience as school secretary, she has worked in the capacity of a secretary for a real-estate broker and small business.  “I am so thankful for this amazing opportunity” said Mrs. Price. “The best part about my job is the wonderful people I work with. They are so helpful and friendly and have made me feel welcomed.” Mrs. Price also understands how important it is to be friendly and helpful to the public and the employees when they come into the school. She understands that a school secretary is usually the first face most of the public meets when they come into the office, and it is her responsibility to meet and interact with them tactfully and show courtesy.  She also understands that the public and employees depend on her for various information throughout the day, so it is equally important to her to be punctual, present, and informed at all times. Mrs. Price admits that the most challenging part of her job is learning new names and faces, but she is committed to greet all people with a smile and already shines professionally with Tiger P.R.I.D.E!  Welcome aboard Jamie Price! Jefferson Middle High and Jefferson County Schools are happy to welcome you and your family into our district!

Spotlight on Tiger P.R.I.D.E: Carol Revell

Superintendent Al Cooksey challenged all Jefferson County employees to make a commitment to strive for Tiger P.R.I.D.E (Personal Responsibility in Developing Excellence) as we unite together to move the district forward to a higher standard of excellence. Mr. Key, Principal of Jefferson Elementary School, recognized quickly that fifth grade teacher, Carol Revell, exhibited qualities of excellence in the rapport with her students and classroom instruction.  “She is well deserving because we have asked a lot from our teachers this year, and she has complied even with small requests”, explained Mr. Key. Mrs. Revell, a 35-year veteran of the Jefferson Elementary School, is one year away from retirement, yet still strives to stay  abreast of new educational  technology and provides her students with a quality education.  When asked how she felt that Mr. Key was quick to name her for showing Tiger P.R.I.D.E, Mrs. Revell responded, “It’s exciting and makes me want to work harder!”  Mrs. Revell’s bulletin board sums up the result of what a positive attitude and drive for personal excellence achieves… Success!

Each week the Jefferson County School District will continue to shine the spotlight on an employee who goes above and beyond to enrich the lives of our students and improve our schools by his/her dedication and commitment to Tiger P.R.I.D.E. Mrs. Revell has certainly set the bar high!

PARENTS

Are you the parent of a high school Freshman or Sophomore?  If you can answer yes to that question, here are a few things to remember:  Schedule a meeting with your student's guidance counselor to ensure your student is on the right track for graduation. Talk to the Guidance Counselor about college prep programs for your student.  Go to Florida Virtual Campus with your student and have them complete a College and Career Readiness Evaluation (www.flvc.org). Start smart with grades; encourage your student.  High school can be overwhelming at times, but it's much easier for your child to maintain a good grade point average than try and pull up a low one.  Sophomores need to register to take college entrance pre-tests.  Work with your school administrators to ensure that your student signs up to take the PSAT and PLAN.  The results will help your student decipher which areas require more study time before he/she takes the real test.  Students can practice for the SAT and ACT on line, and can sign up to receive "Question of the Day" emails to help them prepare for test day.  If your student is finding it difficult to find an after-school or summer job, encourage them to volunteer.  Volunteerism can instill or enhance life-long skills, enhance a student's resume for college entrance and can grant a student appreciation for those that work in different non-profit organizations like animal shelters, food banks, shelters, etc.

Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday

A message from Representative Richard Corcoran:

Dear Friend,

During the 2014 Legislative Session, we worked hard to make sure Floridians are able to afford the necessities of life.  We cut taxes and fees by $500 million in our attempts to make Florida a more affordable place to live and raise a family, and we also realized the importance of giving Floridians three different sales tax holidays:  back-to-school, hurricane-preparedness, and energy efficient products. As we are fast-approaching the beginning of a new school year, the Legislature knew it was important to create a 3 Day Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday to make purchasing necessary school supplies more affordable to all Floridians.  The sales tax holiday runs from August 1-3 and we encourage you and your family to take advantage of it now before you miss out on the savings!  The attached file is a great source of information regarding the 2014 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday.

FFA Agriculture Sales Team Places 7th!

Congratulations to Ian Haselden, Allison Heffner and Jake Long for placing 7th out of 250 teams in the state of Florida that recently competed in a FFA Agriculture Sales Career Development event in Gainesville, FL.  The District is excited about re-introducing FFA and Agriculture on the campus of JCMHS, and this is an exciting result of the efforts of the instructor, Sarah Burleson, and the students taking the course.  This is the first time Jefferson County has ever competed in this event of three components:  Identifying the needs of customers and potential product to meet the needs, sales strategies and presenting sales strategies to a panel of judges.  The final step was an exit exam to indicate they understood the basic principles of selling.  Way to go students! We look forward to more great things in the Fall!
